Lawns on Marl Country Ground

Hydroseeding in Evesham Township, which includes Marlton, takes place on ground with an unusual history. Marl, a green clay with shell remnants, was dug here as fertilizer, and mining it drove the first building boom in the 1830s and 1840s. Marl mining continued until 1930. Farmers valued it because it improved their soil, and that farming history is still under many Evesham yards.

From farms to developments

The township kept its rural character until the 1950s. Then developers bought farms and built housing, and the population went from 4,548 in 1960 to 35,309 in 1990. Many lawns are now 30 to 60 years old and ready for renovation. Former farm soil is usually workable, but construction compacted it and builders often left only a thin topsoil layer.

Pinelands edge

Evesham is one of 56 South Jersey municipalities in the Pinelands National Reserve, and part of the township is in the state-designated Pinelands Area. Projects in Pinelands areas can face extra rules on clearing and land disturbance, so we check before starting larger grading jobs and keep erosion and sediment control tight.

Sandy ground

At about 59 feet in elevation on the Coastal Plain, much of the township has sandy, fast-draining soil. Hydromulch helps hold moisture around new seed, but light, frequent watering is still key for the first few weeks.

Old Nike site

The Army opened a 38-acre Nike Ajax missile site on Tomlinson Mill Road in 1955. It was turned into housing by the mid-1990s, an example of how much former non-farm land in the township has also become residential.

Evesham Township Questions

Does the Pinelands designation affect my project?

It can for larger clearing or grading jobs. We check the property's status before major earth work.

Why does my Marlton lawn need so much water?

Sandy soil drains fast. Topsoil or compost and a heat-tolerant fescue blend help.

Is my yard on old farmland?

Most Evesham neighborhoods were farms before the 1950s, so the soil underneath is often workable.

Can you seed detention basins in developments?

Yes. We use blankets in flow lines and hydroseed with mulch on the slopes.
