Seeding Ground Between Two Rivers

Hydroseeding Philadelphia sprays new lawns, stabilizes slopes and handles the erosion and sediment work that comes before and after a seeding job, across the city and its suburbs on both sides of the Delaware.

The region is not one kind of ground. Philadelphia sits on the Atlantic Seaboard Fall Line, where the rolling Piedmont meets the flat Atlantic Plain. Northwest of that line, upland soils like the Chester series weather from micaceous schist into silt loam over a silty clay loam subsoil. Along the river and in South Jersey the ground turns sandy. The city itself runs from sea level to about 446 feet in Chestnut Hill. A lawn in a Fishtown back yard, a slope in Lower Merion and a builder's lot in Bucks County each need a different plan, and we write that plan before anyone starts a pump.

The weather sets the calendar. Philadelphia averages about 44 inches of precipitation a year, summer heat with high dew points, and an average freeze window from early November to early April. Penn State Extension names late summer as the optimum time to seed cool-season grass in most of Pennsylvania, with mid to late spring as the second window. We book around those windows and tell you plainly when a job should wait.

On construction and redevelopment sites, the rules matter as much as the seed. The Philadelphia Water Department requires an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan for projects with 5,000 square feet or more of earth disturbance, and state rules under 25 Pa. Code 102.22 count a site as permanently stabilized only with a uniform 70 percent perennial vegetative cover or another approved practice. We seed, mulch, blanket and fence with those standards in mind.

Our process

  • Before anything is priced, we walk the property with you
  • We check topsoil depth, drainage, slope and how much sun each area gets
  • Written estimates break out grading, topsoil, seed, mulch, blankets and silt fence
  • Seed mixes follow Penn State guidance for sun, shade and wear
  • Slopes get heavier mulch, tackifier or blankets instead of a light lawn mix
  • We leave you written watering and first-mowing instructions
  • On permitted sites we work to the approved E&S plan and keep controls in place until the cover is established
